Unable to install content

Postby Mari-Anne » Fri May 15, 2009 2:07 pm

Hi,

I just received my copy of From the Ground Up, and like everyone else, I wanted to start off by downloading the content. I have no problems with the PDF files, however, the Book Tutorial Pack (pc installer) gives the following message when I try to run the file:

The installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on a 64-bit system. The installation file has an .msi extension that I am not familiar with.

Any suggestions?

Edit:

I downloaded the .msi file to my XP computer and successfully ran the installation. So apparently it's a Vista "thing." However, the installation gave no clue as to which files (or where) were installed so I cannot move them to my Vista computer, i.e. I'm still up a creek without a paddle.

You may have to run the install as an administrator on your Vista Box. I have Home Premium32 and don't recall having a problem, but I do it without thinking.

Since I have Vue6 on my PC also, the files went into \Documents\e-on software\Vue6Esprit\Books Studio\GeekAtPlay Studio\Vue7 From The Ground Up

If it had installed to my Vue 7 directory, the path should be \Documents\e-on software\Vue7\Books Studio\GeekAtPlay Studio\Vue7 From The Ground Up

On XP I believe you would be looking in the My Documents \e-on software... folder.

OK - I'm good to go. Initially, I used Firefox to download the installation file, and that just refused to work. I then tried Internet Explorer 7, and everything seems to have installed just fine (I was already logged in as Administrator). You're right, Brian, the files went into the Geek at Play Studio folder in each respective category at the e-on software\Vue 7 Infinite\ location in Vista.

I am sure I will (enjoy the book, that is). So far, I'm only on Chapter 2 and am already super-pleased that I am encountering really useful information rather than a typical "repeat or restatement" of an owners' manual.

I wish more authors were like Vadimir & Ami and realized that people learn by examples rather than by dry text who doesn't mean much to the beginner.
