Down by the Riverside

Postby Mari-Anne » Tue Dec 16, 2008 4:00 pm

Hello to all the kind elfs at Geek at Play,

As a newcomer to the wonderful world of Vue, I am tremendously enjoying all the great tutorials here, starting with the Beginners & Epic Landscapes section. On top of my Geek at Play Christmas Wish List is a tutorial covering the creation of a stream landscape. I would love to see a project-oriented type tutorial, like the ones included in the Epic Landscape series, on how to make a fairly flat river bed terrain(s), with irregular banks, lots of nice trees, bushes & grass alongside a peaceful and slow-flowing stream.

I am especially interested in getting the banks and the water looking realistic but with a fairly level terrain rather than lots of steep mountains. I am using Vue 7 Infinite, so my preference would be for this version of Vue.

I am hoping there are other newbies like me who would appreciate a tutorial like this.

Would you be so kind as to post an image as an example of what you want? You were very descriptive in your explanation and I thank you for that, but if possible, it is always easier to have a visual example.

Yes, Gary - that is precisely it! And I apologize for posting my initial request under "New Tutorials" instead of under "Requests."

Oops, Gary. I didn't see your earlier post about posting an example. Actually, I have a couple of perfect examples in mind, but I didn't want to offer them because they are posted at "another" 3d site, namely Renderosity. However, since I know you frequently drop by there as well, I am going to be bold. I love Miska7's stream renders (actually, all her renders are great):

Rocky Stream or Fall Stream, just to name a few.

That what gary posted is the perfect start for something like that. Basicly you dubbelclik the terrain, hit reset and then use the brush start with maximum set to something like 3 or 5 . Then make the brush smaller and use minimum set to lets say 1 or 2 to paint the the river or stream. crop the terrain a bit and you have a start. use the same terrain without the stream brushed in for water and on the other side add the trees and such.

Thanks, Mannie. That's how I basically made this image (although it's a winter scene):

But I thought it would be really beneficial to follow along with a real professional tutorial, and I think the tutorials in the Epic Landscape series are so thorough and I do learn so much from them.
