Wait for version 8. If you seen Siggraph demos, one of the new function that added, was specifically to create this type of look.

From what i had seen from the videos before they were removed it was hard too see what the capabilities of strata was but if one can not only get the various layer sizes say thickness variations, both smooth and hard layer variations as well an embedded stones within the layers then i'd be pleased but i will be patient to see what that function can do.

Also note that there are a ton of alluvial fans in that image as well. Something else of a challenge.
